Jewelry is one of the best ways to accessorize any outfit. A statement piece can easily take you from blah to bam! Jewelry prices range from being very inexpensive to are you kidding me? Costume jewelry is usually inexpensive and is made up of different metals that is coated with gold plating or silver plating. Jewelry that falls in that "are you kidding me" price range, are made up of precious metals (14kt, .925 Silver, 18kt, etc) and genuine gemstones. Costume jewelry is a great option because it is affordable which allows you to have a variety of options. Some people prefer not to buy costume jewelry because they feel that it is a temporary option but it doesn't have to be! That necklace that you paid $25 for can actually stay in great condition for years to come, as long as it is properly cared for. Costume jewelry will turn dull, dark, and even green if you don't take care of it. And who is trying to walk around with a green neck? Ever heard of the Incredible Hulk? To save your neck and your wallet, we are giving you some tips to keep your costume jewelry in tip top shape for years to come.
Tip #1 - Avoid water, sweat and any other type of moisture. Remove your jewelry before jumping the pool taking a shower, or during a sweaty spin class!
Tip #2 - Put it on last! We love wearing our body oils, lotions, and perfumes, don't we ladies? Unfortunately, costume jewelry isn't a big fan so get dressed, apply all of your smell goods and put your jewelry on last to keep it from coming in contact with the oil, lotions and perfumes on your body.
Tip #3 - Use toothpaste to polish faux silver. Sound crazy but it works! Take a small amount of toothpaste (any kind) and rub it on the piece you want to clean. Let is dry for about two minutes and then rinse with warm water, this is the only time we recommend using water on costume jewelry. After rinsing, make sure that you have completely dried the piece and it will be back to it's original shine!!
Tip #4 - Store in a cool and dry place. Heat and moisture can cause costume jewelry tarnish quickly! To avoid that make sure that you are storing them in a cool and dry place to keep them protected.
Tip #5 - Use a polishing cloth. If your jewelry is looking a little lack luster, rub it with a polishing to restore its shine!
Tip #6 - Use anti-tarnish strips. You can find inexpensive anti-tarnish strips online or in the store. Place the anti-tarnish strips in the same container as your jewelry. The strips help protect the jewelry from outside gases that cause the jewelry to tarnish. You should replace the strips every 6 months or so. Some of our Blue Labels Boutique jewelry already comes with anti-tarnish strip!
